Pulehu Ribeye Steak

Growing up in Hawaii, it is common to start up the hibachi and throw on a steak and some portuguese sausage to eat as a pupu or appetizer.  The term for simply seasoning and grilling some steaks is commonly referred to as pulehu steak.  Pulehu means cooking on an open fire.

This is my favorite way to pulehu ribeye steak.  Feel free to experiment or use your favorite cut of beef or even ribs.

  • 1/2" thick ribeye steaks
  • shoyu
  • sesame oil
  • hawaiian salt

Cooking Process:

Allow steaks to sit out or about 10-15 minutes.  Simply rub steaks with sesame oil, splash shoyu on the steaks and lightly sprinkle with hawaiian salt.  You can allow it to sit for up to 30 minutes or just put them on a hot grill or hibachi.

Cook for 5 minutes on each side.  If you like it med or med well, cook for about 6-7 minutes on each side.  Adjust accordingly based on thickness of meat and temperature of meat.
