Aunty Helenʻs Won Ton by Sissy Lake-Farm

Sissy Lake-Farm joins us on this Mondays episode of Cooking Hawaiian Style (CookingHawaiianStyle.com) presented by Maui County Farm Bureau. Sissy is the Executive Director at Maui Historical Society / Hale Hō'ikeʻike at the Bailey House. She is the daughter of renowned Historian and Kumu Hula John Keola Lake.
Sissy was born and raised in Maui and feels a deep commitment to ensuring the history and heritage of her home is shared and protected for generations to come. She began dancing hula when she was 5 years old and today, following in her fathers footsteps, she is now a kumu hula herself.
We are excited to have Sissy in the kitchen this week sharing very personal recipes and the stories that surround them.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 can Spam
  • 2 stalks Green onion
  • 1 can Water chestnut
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 pack Won ton wraps (about 25)
  • 4 cups Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup Water

Instructions
 

  • Cube spam into small pieces.
  • Dice green onions.
  • Drain water from water chestnuts then dice into small pieces.
  • All ingredients into a bowl and crack raw egg into bowl and knead and fold until mixed.
  • Take a spoonful of the mixture and place on 1 wrap.
  • Using the back of the spoon, dip it in the bowl of water.
  • Rub that along the edge of the wrap to moisten it.
  • Fold wrapper in half and seal edges.
  • Make sure there are no openings.
  • Continue same process until finished.
  • In a deep pot ad the vegetable oil and heat up to 350 degrees.
  • Place won ton in heated oil.
  • Do not overcrowd the pot.
  • When browned turn won ton over, making sure both sides are cooked to brown in color.
  • Place finished won ton on a cooling rack or paper towel on a plate.
  • Enjoy!
