Zippy’s Chili

Must Try

Zippy’s Chili is a beloved Hawaiian local–style classic, known for its rich, savory flavor and hearty stew-like texture. Inspired by the iconic chili served at Zippy’s Restaurants in Hawaiʻi. This recipe combines tender beef, smoky bacon, kidney beans, tomato sauce, and a unique blend of seasonings that make it unmistakably island-style comfort food. Simmered slowly on the stovetop, this chili develops deep flavor while remaining smooth and spoonable. Perfectly fitting into the soup and stew category.

Unlike traditional mainland chili, Zippy’s Chili is mildly spiced and balanced with subtle sweetness, ginger, and umami notes. It’s commonly enjoyed on its own or served the local way. With rice, macaroni, or even as a topping for chili dogs and plate lunches. If you enjoy hearty island dishes, be sure to explore other local favorites like Portuguese Bean Soup and Hawaiian-style stews on our site.

Zippy’s Restaurants have been a cornerstone of Hawaiʻi’s food culture since the 1960s. Serving comfort food that blends American classics with local tastes. You can learn more about their history and menu influence directly from the zippy’s.

Whether you’re recreating a taste of Hawaiʻi at home or looking for a cozy, satisfying meal, this Zippy’s Chili recipe delivers authentic local flavor in every bowl.

Zippy’s Chili

I was digging through Mom's box of recipes and found an envelope from her friend Pat Anderson containing a newspaper clipping dated 1969 with a recipe for Zippy's Chili submitted by Zippy's. I am convinced that this is the original recipe for Zippy's Chili, but not the exact recipe that we have all grown up loving.
The main missing ingredient is the portuguese sausage. With that said, I think if you start with the basic recipe provided here but add ground up portuguese sausage, that you will have what is known as Zippy's Chili!
